PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The Associate of Science in Emergency Medicine Technician (AS-EMT) program at School of Health Professions prepares students to become competent and compassionate first responders capable of delivering life-saving care in pre-hospital and emergency settings. This intensive, hands-on program equips learners with critical assessment, stabilization, and patient transport skills required to manage trauma, medical emergencies, and disaster response with efficiency and precision.

Through a blend of classroom instruction, laboratory practice, and clinical rotations, students develop a strong foundation in emergency medical care and patient communication. Graduates of the program will be qualified for roles in ambulance services, fire and rescue departments, disaster response teams, lifeguard and search & rescue units, and hospital emergency departments.

Year 1 – Academic and Laboratory Instruction

The first trimester introduces students to the healthcare system and its ethical, legal, and technological framework. Courses include Healthcare Delivery Systems, Medical English Communication, Medical Terminology, Healthcare Law & Ethics, and Health Informatics. Students also begin their emergency training through foundational modules like Introduction to Emergency Medical Care, Well-being of the EMT, and Baseline Vital Signs and Sample History.

In the second trimester, the focus shifts toward core emergency medical sciences. Students engage in Anatomy & Physiology, Basic Life Support (BLS), Pharmacology, and Patient Assessment Techniques. Specialized training in Airway Management, Biomedical Waste Handling, and Patient Transport Techniques further enhances clinical preparedness.

The third trimester integrates more advanced instruction in patient care and emergency operations. Students are trained in Trauma Management, Operational Protocols, and Medical Emergencies, culminating in an in-depth module on Patient Assessment III to consolidate knowledge from earlier trimesters.

Year 2 – Clinical Training and Field Practice

In trimesters four through six, students transition into full-time Clinical Practical Experience (CPE). These supervised hospital rotations offer exposure to high-pressure emergency environments, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world patient care situations. Clinical assignments are complemented by advanced modules in Medical Emergencies II and III, providing continuous knowledge reinforcement during the practicum phase.

Students will complete instruction and clinical experience, supported by faculty mentorship and performance evaluations to ensure readiness for national or regional certification.

Career Opportunities

Graduates are equipped to work in a variety of emergency care environments, including Ambulance and EMS services, Fire and rescue departments, Hospitals and trauma centers, Lifeguard and coastal rescue operations, Ski patrol and adventure rescue teams, Search and rescue (SAR) agencies, Disaster response units (natural and human-made).

With additional training and certification, EMTs may progress to roles such as Advanced EMTs, Paramedics, Emergency Room Technicians, or Emergency Medical Educators.
